World Bellyboard Championships

Sep 05, 2010

Chapel Porth, Cornwall

We popped down the Atlantic Highway from North Devon to Chapel Porth beach in Cornwall for the 8th annual World Bellyboard Championships on September 5th, 2010.

In the back of our VW combi Mobile Museum we took a selection of classic British wooden surfboards from the last 100 years. The art of surf riding has been around in Britain for at least a century, and was a massively popular part of our beach culture before World War Two (the photo to the left was pre 1939 Perranporth, Cornwall).

This wonderful celebration of prone surfing now attracts more than 200 entrants from all over the world – and one of the best things about it is that’s all just for fun. No wetsuits, no swim fins, no leashes – just you, a small piece of wood and a swimming costume.

Many thanks to the National Trust for inviting us to attend.
