Work starts to catalogue Museum of British Surfing collection

added to the website on Jul 02, 2014

Work has started to catalogue the Museum of British Surfing’s massive collection, as part of the programme to achieve Arts Council England accreditation.

In the photo with this post, museum volunteer Pauline D’Rane can been seen completing the first ‘object entry form’ with founder Peter Robinson.

The first item recorded is a surfboard shaped for Viscount Ted Deerhurst who became Britain’s first professional surfer back in 1978. The board was purchased by Peter from a collection in Australia a decade ago & donated to the museum’s permanent collection as part of his generous founding gift.

Accreditation is a nationally agreed standard for museums in the UK, which helps demonstrate that collections are managed effectively for the enjoyment & benefit of the public. It covers all areas of a museum’s running including performance, planning & patronage among its measures.

The Museum of British Surfing was approved to work on the programme following an initial submission to Arts Council England last year and is aiming to complete its formal accreditation early in 2015. The process is being led by surfing museum chairman Kevin Cook, backed up by founder Peter Robinson and volunteers Pauline D’Rane and Jenny Church.
