Surfboard leash sucker

Matchbox VW Golf 1976

This Matchbox VW Golf Mark 1 was made in England in the mid 1970s and featured a pair of plastic surfboards on the roof. It has ‘superfast’ wheels, so that it could be used on plastic racing tracks that were popular at the time.

Deora Hot Wheels 1968

The Deora is a wonderfully futuristic looking ‘surf truck’ first produced by Mattel’s Hot Wheels in the late 1960s, and based on an original design by Dodge. This a rare 1970s skateboard produced by Surfer Magazine in California, featuring a beautiful collage of their classic magazine covers of this golden era. It has Continental trucks and a fibreglass deck and was found in Brighton – a hotbed of 1970s skating – in used, but very good condition. Skateboarding was invented by surfers ……»

Bought by Nick Paden (Yorkshire, England) on a trip to Hawaii in 1986 from the Local Motion shop in Honolulu these were the height of surfing fashion in the 80s, and some companies are now referencing the day-glo style for their ‘new’ designs.

Fashioned from the finest North Devon driftwood, this is a mixed media piece by local artist Katie Goodwin aka Shrimpy. It shows 1960s surfing icon Rod Sumpter on his trademark Bilbo longboard, inspired by a 1967 photo by the late Doug Wilson.

Late 1960s surfing jigsaw 1968

This beauty dates from around 1968 and features a very lucky guy taking his ‘malibu board’ off the roofrack of his lovely Alfa Romeo while his ‘bird’ looks on – sweet!
