Memorabilia: Local Motion boardshorts 1986

Bought by Nick Paden (Yorkshire, England) on a trip to Hawaii in 1986 from the Local Motion shop in Honolulu these were the height of surfing fashion in the 80s, and some companies are now referencing the day-glo style for their ‘new’ designs.

This is the cover for the programme of the 1973 British surfing championships held at Freshwater West in Pembrokeshire and featuring an awesome photo of Welshman Pete Jones surfing.

This is an advert on the back cover of the programme for the 1969 European surfing championships held in Britain. It shows sponsorship by a cigarette company that was quite common at the time, but wouldn’t be allowed today.

This photo is of Hobart Braddick (left on screen) on Westward Ho! beach in North Devon in the early 1900s – his family believes it was taken before World War One, and the exact date is still being researched but is thought to be around 1918. It’s one of the earliest images found so far ……»

Wetsuits: Homemade wetsuit 1970

This wonderful ‘beaver tail’ wetsuit jacket was homemade around 1970, and it was donated along with wetsuit trousers, spare material, the original suppliers’ brochure and full patterns for how to make it! Surfboards: Powers Surfboards 1964

When this board was shaped around 1964 boards were called ‘malibu’ boards or just surfboards – the term longboard didn’t really come into play until the 1980s when people wanted to differentiate between the ‘older’ style of board (usually 9 to 10 feet long) and the ‘modern’ shortboard.
