We’re stoked that the mural painting project with young people is now getting underway at Braunton skate bowl.
Last night youth volunteers from Braunton Youth Centre, along with staff from Devon Youth Services, ourselves and other volunteers, joined artist Conor Wilson to sketch out the new designs on the walls.
The work is funded by the Museum of British Surfing through the ‘Count Me In’ scheme which aims to engage young people with museums in new ways.
Youth ambassadors Hannah and Lewis pulled together ideas for the new murals with other young people at Braunton Youth Centre and worked with local artist & surfer Conor Wilson to bring them to life. Conor worked tirelessly to create the artwork and then project it onto the walls for the volunteers to draw.
The actual painting will take place between 10am & 4pm between Saturday July 23 & Thursday July 28 – please come down and pick up a paintbrush or bring some refreshments for the young (and not so young!) volunteers.
The old graffiti art at the skate bowl had become tired & worn, and was recently painted over to give a fresh canvas for the young people of Braunton to work on.
A huge thanks to Conor Wilson, youth worker Tom Mack & his colleagues, the volunteers including world class snowboarder James Stentiford – and most of all Hannah, Lewis and all the young people who put forward their ideas and are pitching in with the work to create a stunning new piece of public art.
The new murals will be revealed next week. Thanks also go to the firm Graffiti Magic who are providing a vandal proof coating and other local businesses & individuals who have donated materials and time.
