1967 - “Learn to Surf” by Doug Wilson is published

“Learn to Surf” by Doug Wilson, published in 1967 by The European Surfing Company, was sold with new Bilbo boards to help newcomers to the sport – complete with a glossary of surfing terms. Before this surfers had to try to get hold of American books and magazines for information.

Soon afterwards ‘Surfing – what its all about” by former Newquay lifeguard G. T Roberts looked at
basic surfing techniques, alongside a brief guide to the best beaches and safety in the sea.

From these small beginnings, surfing grew rapidly in Britain – mirroring the massive scenes in the States and ‘down under’. Almost every coast soon had its own surfing community.

Surfers like Steve Harewood from Jersey, soon matched the Californians for Style and technique.
